chickencam
Has anyone else had a chicken that has laid anything like this? They are small balls about the size of a large marble wrapped in the same membrane you get under the shell of a normal egg and when you open them they only have white inside. My White Star has so far laid 4 normal eggs and a few soft or shell less eggs in between. Yesterday she had a sticky behind and was looking listless then she popped one of these strange balls out straight after a poo ( then immediately perked up ), and today I found one in the poo tray of the eglu when I emptied it which must have happened before I let them out at 6.30 am. Christian
Liz, I wouldn't worry too much about the eggs just yet. I take it the white star is very young as you said she has only laid 4 proper eggs so far? Give her egg tackle (!) a bit of time to settle and i'm sure she will be ok. We had a problem with Laverne when she first started laying, a few good eggs, then softie, then just yolk, then weird blobby stuff. Then a marble sized egg, then nothing then proper eggs!!!! It took a couple of weeks to settle down. Shame she is moulting at the mo, we are down to 1 egg a day! I'm sure she will sort herself out soon. chickencam
Thanks for the reassurance, she 'laid' a pile of white with yolky streaks and a little bit of blood last night. She is happy enough but the other 3 were all pecking at her bottom last night because they had the scent of blood ( whether this came from the egg laying or the pecking I'm not sure ). We took her out of the run and cleaned her up and applied some antiseptic cream. She has two very small wounds around her vent and what looks like a scab from previous pecking. We then isolated her in a seperate house and run alongside the eglu run and we will leave her in there for 48 hours. We hope that we are doing the right thing because we seemed to have relative harmony recently but we were worried about the pecking and she has lost quite a few feathers in that area over the 2.5 wks that we have had her. May have to be bumper bits next but I hope not.
Christian
Separating her is exactly the right thing to do. Unfortunately, chickens are attracted to red and will peck at the bloody area. Someone on the forum lost a hen to her being badly vent pecked, so the separation and cream will do her good. Try and wait until the pecked area is completely healed before reintruducing her.
