Rugbygreens
We picked up our first pekin bantams this week - one of them has a ‘foamy’ eye. We have bathed it twice a day daily - but is not going away. The breeder says stress, our local vet said similar but admitted they didn’t have much experience of chickens. should we be worried? Can the chicken live with this? Will it affect the other birds?
Daphne
It sounds like mycoplasma to me, which is a fairly common disease, but it needs treatment by a vet. Actually, I would return the bird. It is not in a fit state to be sold.
Beantree
Mycoplasma. We've just lost a hen to this as it can lead to swollen nostrils and infection. Definitely return the bird as it is far too much trouble to try and treat. The breeder shouldn't have this in their flock and should stop breeding and selling immediately. Yes it will infect the other birds so keep it separate. It flares up when their immune system is depressed eg. end of a season laying, bad weather and moulting.
