Laura007
whilst trying to find some lard to make pastry i noticed that it has a huge use by date. why is this??? i can remeber being told donkey years ago that if you left lard for to long it goes rancid. Guest
Cos it just is Sorry, I don't have a clue, but as noone had posted a reply I did not want you to feel left out. All I can think of is that if it is pure fat without additives it would naturally last longer. Other things will oil mixed in with them do not last because of the chemical reactions probably. But to be honest I don't have a proper technical answer. Years ago, when you were a twinkle in your parents eye, things did not have sell by dates and use by dates and kept for years. Fat kept for months in the larder in the winter. Good insn't it? Means you can have a stock of it and not have to worry!
Mrs Blue Sky
I think it's oxidisation that makes food go rank, ie exposure to air, also all the bacteria in the air plays its part too.. So if it is wrapped in the fridge it will be ok for ages. Also lard is a purified product, with all the bits that might go off, blood etc, taken away. So you can believe the sell by date I think - anyway if it goes rank you won't be in any doubt! It will ming big time!
