buffie
Shrove Tuesday is celebrated in Olney England like nowhere else on earth! Townsfolk gather to see the original and unique Olney Pancake Race which is now world famous. Traffic stops while the competitors make their 415 yard dash from the Bull Hotel (old coaching Inn) to the Parish Church of St.Peter & St. Paul. This is the blurb for the olney pancake race on March 7th 2006. I may be distributing flyers for The Battery Hen Welfare Trust, media come from around the world. Does anyone fancy coming to join me I wondered? Let me know if your free and fancy it! BBx

Cate in NZ
Just thought I'd revive this since it's Pancake Day today, and I've been wondering if you were able to distribute flyers for BHWT today Buffie? I had to take my son to the opticians this morning, and nipped into the local Asda to pick up a couple of essentials whilst we were out, and nearly got knocked down in the stampede (OK, slight exaggeration, but not much ) of Swanley housewives trying to get "bargain" Smart Price eggs, 18 eggs for something like 88p , special deal for pancake day as far as I could tell. I made some very loud comments but son got embarrassed and asked me to shut up BTB, son has a progress day today, officially out of school until this afternoon when we have a series of parent teacher interviews to help decide GCSE options (and best leave that there- I can feel another rant coming on - why do they make this so difficult ). I don't take him supermarket shopping during school hours normally. Sorry Buffie, wandering off topic again, but I'd be really interested to hear if you did the Pancake Race thing, and how you got on
Guest
Oh Thanks kateA. Yep I went and Mikey came along as he'd never seen it and said he'd take some photo's for the BHWT and the Omlet newsletter. Gave out about 100plus leaflets and had some nice comments and a couple of oh god no (amercan women not wanting my leaflet) One old chap said 'battery hens lovely' and one chap told me he wasn't interested and pushed it in my face. I asked him if the picture put him off he just glared at me and said not interested. I smiled and said thank you Not what I felt though and language in head was One lady said oh how interesting as her son had adopted 6 girls and she and her friend will watch Jimmy's Farm tonight. We've just had some pancakes and the girls have all had some including daisie. First pancakes with our eggs, never seen batter so yellow and they were the best Worth and hour and a half out of our day and if just one or two have a think it's worth it. Thanks again and grrrr to egg bargains BBx

Cate in NZ
Thanks for that Buffie, it sounds like an interesting experience I think I'd have found it very hard to remain polite and calm confronted by some of the people you encountered . Well done you
Cinnamon
I can't help but wonder - would people run faster if it was FROM the church TO the pub??? I know I probably would Sounds fun Buffie, hope it goes well
buffie
I have to be honest the race is all a bit boring (sorry but it's a few mins of running with a frying pan) but it's a nice tradition. Yep i'd enter if i could run to the pub, I'd be first! After all the excitement Lottie decided lets scare mummy half to death by leaping through the balustrade on the deck into the field next door. She didn't go far but had me crawling in the undergrowth calling 'Lottie' for ages and just kept turning her back on me enjoying worms and snails by the ton. I decided to give it a break and try to iron (not easy because my head was fillling with images of nightfall and Lottie in a fox or just not back in her safe eglu) Heard a row outside all of them trumpeting an alarm so rushed down she'd gone my big girls were shouting and Hollie started. My hear sank and Mikey came running out and I told him I thought something may have taken her. I went into the ditch with eyes a bit full and suddenly saw her she'd jumped the stream and was patrolling the fence to get in managed to get her and she is now safe and sound. The best thing is knowing she wanted to come home, I shall be running to the wine rack later BBx
