Should I be using red mite powder??

Recommended Posts

At first I assumed I wouldn't need to use red mite powder as I thought it was really just for wooden coops and not needed for a cube.

But now I'm not sure having read various threads on the forum.

Can someone tell me if I should be using it at the ends of the roosting bars (or anywhere else for that matter).

Much obliged. :D

I've always used it. Im a big believer in prevention rather than cure. we used the powder weekly. We dismantle both eglus every weekend and hose them down and then dust the powder in the eglu/over the bars and in the nooks and crannies. I think red mite is more dominant in Summer when it is warm, but we've used the powder for 18months and no sign of redmite here. It smells lovely and fresh too!! :D

I bought my hens a huge tub of red mite powder when I first got them last December thinking I would need it but so far I haven't used it. Sorry Chelsea but I feel the opposite to you and never use anything unless I have to. I'm worried the red mites could become resistant to it and therefore cause more of a problem but that's just my opinion. It is supposed to smell lovely and I know some owners put it in their hen's dust bath but to be honest I haven't even taken the lid off mine so I can't comment on the lovely smell.

I thought I didnt' need it cos of the Eglu and then I realised I had red mite.

Scrubbed the Eglu, scrubbed the bars put the powder down and no sign since.

I always put it in now when I've scrubbed out the Eglu (which I only do once a month - just do the bars weekly.)

Only if you've got red mite.

I get a bit worried about using these things preventively - makes me think about prophylactic use of antibiotics which has caused a lot of probs
