Is it advisable to bring our chooks in from the cold?

Recommended Posts

Farmer confirmed vaseline beneficial to prevent scaly mite and found their chooks were less prone to infestation problems.

Suggested emulsifying ointment as alternative but due to liq paraffin content 50% may be inflammable!

Just a quick question on poo patrol-how often is it necessary to empty the poo tray-daily or every other day? Would a weekly thorough clean be suffiecient in these cold months?

I try to clean out my trays every other day - sometimes I leave it three days but it is getting a bit smelly by then! But then again, I've got seven big hens in my cube (Georgie sleeps separately), so thats a fair bit of poo.

In the summer I can get away with less because they spend longer days outside, but now, with the short days and long nights, they are more time in the Cube which = more poo inside.

Of course! I wondered why they were filling it again almost as fast as I empty it!

I started out clearing poo out every morning, now I'm down to once a week and it's fine. No smell (the garlic really works) and the cold weather helps too. (There's mountains of it by the w/e though :vom: )

Glad it's not just me. Mine get the tray cleaned out prob only once or twice a week at the mo, although I still have to give them new nest stuff every other day cos Marigold insists on sleeping in there and makes it all pooey and damp! Maybe she doesn't like the roosting bars!

My girls sure fill the poo tray- at least the droppings have been solid not runny so pretty straightforward cleaning.

Have lined tray with newspaper which makes job easier.

My girls adore their morning porridge- Tilda is so cheeky she's worked out how to get her greens from the wire feeder and to peck the seedblock attached to the run as well.

As for the magic corn I am sprinkling a tiny amount on some afternoons.

I can't keep up with them-are they overeating?

Porridge devoured in 5 mins flat, greens being devoured almost every day(mesh feeder full) pellets eaten and refilled every 3rd day.

Is this okay bearing in mind 3 chooks.Tilda and Bunty enjoy their food and seem to come out of the eglu instantly.:lol:

I am having grand designs on having a run built(friend is a joiner :D ) too in the spring. No camera at the mo so pics to follow of the girls.
