Aunty e
Sassos are good. We're probably going to go for them next. We have gotten all of our meat birds for free - practical poultry forum has quite a few unwanted cockerels advertised, we pick up a couple every now and then. We despatch when they crow, but as they live with our girls and get beaten up a bit, that doesn't happen very early on. I despatched our dorking cross last week at six months, and we have a sussex cross who is still not crowing. It would be easier to raise girls as well, as that way I wouldn't have to despatch unplanned (have to do the cockerels the moment they crow for the sake of the neigbours). I don't like despatching them, but it's not too horrible after the first couple of times. Just don't name them. Luckily cockerels turn into horrible little gits quite quickly and you don't like them as much as the girls. Plucking is boring and hard work and gutting is gross. It does taste nice, but I'm not going out of my way to find any more. I think I might just source free rangers. Still, try it once and see how you find it.
