lozkate
I think that we have some foxes around as the chooks are behaving very strangly today and the dog has just been out and wont stop barking even when I went out with the torch. I have been looking at fox watches for piece of mind and found a place called Primrose London that are selling the mains type with £15 off at £19.99, they are no good for us as the girls are a bit far from the house and when I have looked at the descriptions the battery powered ones say that they affect dogs so again not much use for us but I thought it might help someone (back to me being a MSE!). Has anyone any ideas other than sending my DH up the garden in the rain (well this will probably help!) when he gets home?! Think I will end up spending the night listening for noises. Thanks Kate
Egluntyne
Get him to empty his bladder while he is up there....male urine puts foxes off.
lozkate
Thanks Egluntine - thats what I was meaning when I said I would send him up the garden. Just want to make sure that I am doing everything possible - you do get attached! I always thought that we would be OK here as we had a rabbit with a run that was only pushed up to the cage and he was always fine day or night but a neighbour (who also has chickens) has seen fox prints in their field and his chooks were making loads of noise at 11pm the other night so I know they are about. Thanks again Kate
feemcg
Is it a 'proper' Foxwatch, Kate? - thats very cheap and mine states that it can't be detected by dogs.
Egluntyne
Thanks Egluntine - thats what I was meaning when I said I would send him up the garden. Aaah I see....to subtle for me! You can also get some stuff called **Get Off My Garden** which is citronella scantedgranules which you scatter about. I quite like the smell, but foxes are not supposed to like it. Also there is **Silent Roar ** which is like granulated lion poo. It is reputed to be effective against foxes, but the manufacturers make no such claim. Olly
That's not the original Foxwatch, LozKate - since I paid around £40 for mine from Primrose, I rushed to the website to see! The 'Mains Cat and Fox Chaser' is the one on offer, and it's not the same. That one they are selling might be fine, but I recommend the actual Foxwatch - it is £44.95 which is pricey I know, but it really works in my opinion. It doesn't affect dogs (as far as I know, it certainly doesn't bother the cat!) and you can use batteries or buy a mains adaptor. Primrose were very quick to deliver, and when my first one turned out to be faulty they replaced it immediately - I'd buy from them again. lozkate
Thanks for all the replies, I did a search on Omlet to see which were recommended but couldnt find a thread. DH has seen that human hair could work (think I remember seeing it on river cottage) so as children need their hair cutting we will put this in some old tights and try this as well. Tessa the Duchess
Before I bought a Foxwatch I had human hair hanging everywhere and every male that entered the house was instructed to 'go' in the garden near the chickens but still the fox came, in broad daylight, cheeky whatsit Finally caved and bought a Fosxwatch, run in on a mains adaptor from the shed and honestly not a sign of a fox since. I'm very vigilant when the chooks are out but I feel a lot happier that they are safer. Tessa
emmat
I might be being a bit daft but what is a Foxwatch? I lost 2 of my chooks to the dreaded fox a few months ago. He comes back and leaves his grotty foot prints all over my eglu every night. What does a Foxwatch do?
feemcg
Here it is - I got mine for £40something from ebay but I think some have paid £60-£70. http://www.conceptresearch.co.uk/fox.htm
