One Man Banned
Don't ask me how I found this on youtube earlier but find it I did. I never watched the programme when it was first broadcast and just watched through the clips that were posted. If you've got 50 minutes to spare (with broadband connection too) I'd watch this through as it's very relevant to the programmes Channel 4 ran with Jamie, Gordon and Hugh recently. *some of the images are a bit disturbing* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esgyv8ynk_c (part 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7xtcuSCWGk (part 2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8FlHalmlgk (part 3) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q-VNPONWKM (part 4) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVm3PRGOrYQ (part 5) I did a rough calculation from a comment the "farmer" makes in part 1, and how he gets 4p profit per kilo. If the 300,000 hens get 60 days, he'll raise 5 batches allowing for a week of cleaning the sheds between stock. So he'll make £60,000 per kilo profit. Average bird weighing 3kg = £180,000 profit. On the same basis, one supermarket makes approx 25p per kilo, roughly making them £360,000 per kilo - for the average 3kg bird, they make £1,080,000 - and that's just from one supplier. Given that most supermarkets buy their stock on 60day account too, they make a fair amount in interest on that money. There was more interesting stuff about the fat content of supermarket chicken too, as well as ready-meals, and the antibiotics involved.
