TAJ
I had new hens a week ago, the one treat that seems to keep them gooing for hours of entertainment is broth mix - we get it from the local store and it is dried split peas, split lentils, flaked barley and pearl barley. They love it and as the bits are so small keeps them rummaging all day. I find a teaspoon a day gives them something to find in the grass and they are then just pecking not scratching - they seem to crave this more than corn - try it and see. Olly
That's interesting ... but do you give it to them dry? I'd be very wary of anything dried that is meant to be soaked in water - when it gets into their crop and mixes with liquid, it could swell up and cause problems. A teaspoonful is a very small amount if it's shared between several so that might be ok - I just know that a lot of dried foods are risky because of this reason. On the other hand I occasionally buy a bag of "scratch" from a particular outlet, which has dried peas in it, so maybe a few are OK.
