Bantam?

Recommended Posts

OK thanks Clare. When I add to my flock in future I think I'll stick with a variety of pekins and maybe a couple of araucana bantams. I'm trying to hold back from spending all my overtime money I've just earnt on a cube so I can add another few bantams! I know I shouldn't but chooks are so addictive

Dragging this post up again!

I'm wondering about getting an extension for the eglu and adding another 2 (3 maximum) bantams, as my idea of a Cube won't work in my garden - it would interfere with the washing too much so is a no go.

But would that be enough space for 7/8 hens? I've currently got a Pekin, a Poland bantam, an Appenzeller (same size as Poland bantam), and 2 silkies (1 is smallish, bit bigger than pekin, and 1 is bit bigger than the other silkie). I'd like to get more Pekins (Lavender, Millefleur and Buff ideally) so they would only be little additions to the flock :)

Whenever I'm at home they get to free range most of the day - so most weekend, usually 1 day a week and in the summer it will be every evening. I know Clare has said she keeps 10 in there but they are nearly always free ranging.

Is 7/8 that too many in an Eglu with run and extension with only that amount of freeranging??? I always have things hanging in the run to keep them entertained with a few perches as well.

My hens only get about the same free-ranging time, and Claret seemed to think that 5 would be OK in a standard run, so I'm sure 7 or even 8 would be fine with the 1m converter - it adds a good 50% to the floor area of the run, so you can add 50% more chickens (2.5) :)
