Thanks and Mabel update

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who replied to my original post on Sunday, it really helped to tap into the chicken community and helped me and OH feel a lot less anxious about the situation. Hubby went to the poultry farm near his work yesterday afternoon and picked up a new chook, rather young (certainly a few weeks from laying) russet red (can't remember what kind he said it is). Mabel has been a bit of a bully this morning but I worked from home and let her have the run of the garden and little new girl got used to the run, and this afternoon they seem to be co-exisiting in the run with no obvious bullying so I am hoping for the best! I gave them a few treats and Mabel even shared (sort of)! The kids have been entirely sanguine about the whole thing, and want to call the new chook 'new Maud'!

I was so sad when I read your post about her leg, poor little love. We always shut our coop door at night for fear of something like that happening. We had aviary birds a long time ago and something similar happened to them so now I'm very cautious and always lock the chooks in at night.

Maud is an excellent choice of name by the way :D

Glad to hear things are going OK at the minute, you had a horrible time before! Kids are great, you think they're going to be SOOOO affected by things, and really upset and then they just take a minute to find a way to deal with it in their heads and it's like "Oh, OK then!"

Hopefully it will carry on happily and they'll be happy hens together! Pictures please

Great news that you could get a newbie so fast - it seems as though yours are getting on fine already. when my first chook died I had already got the new one by the time the kids got in from school so did the "good news/ bad news" thing like the 2 Ronnies and it worked a treat - not a tear shed, even by my 4-year-old! such fickle creatures our children!
