WitchHazel
Gosh, I can't believe how much this has unsettled me. This morning I was getting dressed when Isabelle (cat 1), who was on the windowsill, suddenly got all hunched up. I looked out of the window and saw the tail of what I thought was a ginger cat, running along the inside of our back fence. I did a double take; our ginger boy (Washburn), was sleeping on the bed. Then the "cat" did a right turn by the Coop and I could see it was a fox. I was fixed to the spot. What should I do? Stand and see where it went? RUn down and scare it? I thought that seeing where it went might be a better prospect, as it was heading away from the Girls. But it disappeared. I charged downstairs but, by the time I had unlocked the kitchen door, it has gone. t seems that the Foxwatch is working, as the fox definitely turned away from the Girls where the foxwatch is. Or is that a coincidence? Obviously the Girls are fine. They are in their Run, we used foxproof wire etc. But I had been considering letting them free range. I knew already that we should only letthem do it when we are in the garden, but this has really re-enforced it for me. I will be getting DH to mark the territoty later. Egluntyne
Oh heck......you will need to be extra vigilant when they are free ranging I'm afraid. I think Foxwatches do help....I have also observed foxes taking a detour to avoid it....but it could be my imagination. Get a male personage to "water the grass" around the run regularly...that is supposed to be a deterrent, as is hanging up pop socks stuffed with human hair....so next time you go to the hairdresser ask for the sweepings off the floor. Good luck.
WitchHazel
Thanks for the hair tip Egluntine. I'll do that. My DH doesn't know it yet, but he will be out there this evening Marking His Territory!
Bondinho
Thanks for the hair tip Egluntine. I'll do that. My DH doesn't know it yet, but he will be out there this evening Marking His Territory! He could always pee in a bucket and then pour it around the garden rather than getting caught for indecent exposure!! Sounds like you will have to keep your eyes peeled for Mr Fox then, so glad I literally never get them around my way (which is surprising). WitchHazel
He could always pee in a bucket and then pour it around the garden rather than getting caught for indecent exposure!! I know, but i'm keeping that option to myself at the moment. Bearing in mind he didn't want chickens, and now he's "got used to the idea" (his words), it'll be interesting to see what he's willing (or willy-ing??) to do to protect them.
