Jane 20
We have almost finished our new run and looking forward to getting more chooks! Although we only have an eglu we would like five altogether- the run is 12' x 6' and we would provide another nesting box as advised previously on the forum. I have rung Tracy at Southmead Poultry in Leatherhead and ordered a Skyline an Amber Star (can't wait)and a n other (to be decided) but I seem to remember reading that Southmead don't approve of more than 4 with an eglu? Can anyone help on this?
Egluntyne
Erm....I'm not sure that it is their place to approve or disapprove to be totally honest. It is absolutely up to you. The Eglu will easily accommodate 5 hens.....it is usually just the run that is the constraining factor, but as you have a 12'x6' run, they will be absolutely fine....in fact, I think you could get a sixth one in! I have 4 in each of my Eglu's, and there is plenty more room in there when I peep at them at night. Another nesting box is a good idea for more than 4 hens. Good luck. Carol U
I have an eglu and a run the same size as yours with 5 chooks. I provided an extra wooden house in case they needed more room, but at night they all pile into the eglu together. One of them lays in the wooden house, but that's all. Tracy at Southmead is lovely and I'm sure wouldn't tell you what to do. She may have advised against more than 4 in an eglu run.

mountainboarddude
I ahve gotten all of my birds from southmead and tracy and simon are very friendly and helpful. she is not a fan of the eglu, but she will always offer advice on what to do if you get stuck. all of the birds that i have had from her except one (which had a muscular growth defect, very rare) have been wonderful and very healthy. I would definately reccommend them to anyone in the area.
