mrsm_jones
All you omlet-eers hatching eggs.....was just wondering what your hatch rate of cockerels is, and what on earth you do with them all? Do you only hatch eggs if you can keep the boys?
Christian
Hello Mrsm_jones and welcome to the forum, don't think I have said hello yet As far as I know, everyone who hatches eggs at home, has a farm/friends/etc that keep the cockerels. From what I can remember, I think that the rate is about half boys to girls. The forum has a policy of not rehoming cockerels on here due to hatching experiments, but www.rivercottage.et and www.practicalpoultry.co.uk might have more answers for you. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to give you a guiding hand
feemcg
I've had very mixed ratios from 5 girls, 1 boy with Silver-laced Wyandottes, to 50/50 Buff Sussex, to 8 boys and 5 girls with Cream Legbars (this is just an example, I can't remember all my hatches ). I have a friend who takes most of my boys, where they roam the hills until they're dinner, and I've managed to sell one.
mrsm_jones
Mmm...My friend and I were considering hatching some cream legbars, but neither of us would be able to do "the deed" where the boys were concerned . We're both really soft, so would prob get too attached anyway. I wonder if the butcher might want them.....? How old are they when they start to crow and will they be old enough to eat?
