FORENSICA
Hi! Our combi boiler has been rather moody lately It would heat up the radiators one day and then 3 days nothing You can imagine how happy we are from that, especially now when it was snowing We had a guy here to have a look at it and he said that repair would be £500 or better get a new one for at least £1200. Sounds like a lot to us, since it is possible to get a boiler for about£700. I can not believe that work would cost so much. How long can it take the plumber to install a new boiler, does anybody know?
Egluntyne
My son who is a plumber reckons half a day tops.
Lesley
I agree - half a day. That does seem to be a bit on the expensive side (I used to work with my plumber ex.)
FORENSICA
Thanks a lot! That can give me an idea how much the labour might cost if I ask some company to install it for us.
Ana's flock
Ours packed up at the end of February. For us is not only a matter of how much but when, as most plumbers we contacted couldn't do the job until mid/end April. We chose one who seemed good, gave us lots of CLEAR information and said he'd do it 29th April... well, I e-mailed him to confirm that we wanted to go ahead, and then I went away for 10 days... on my return there was no reply (strange because he had been very good communicator) so I phoned him: he didn't get my message, had been in bed with flu, and now he'll be replacing my boiler on 13th May!!! in the meantime we've got to go somewhere else when we want to shower, and there's no heating in the house... Anyway, as a guide of prices, we've been quoted from £1668.50 to £2506.97 (We've got 6 quotes - British Gas is the most expensive, as they said 'we've got a lot of people to pay and vans to maintain.' Our house was built around 13 years ago and apparently because of that we need to change the pipes to the meter because for a combi boiler now regulation dictates pipes should be thicker... then there's the debate: to combi vs non-combi, etc etc, a minefield of information! Forensica, I hope yours is a bit more straight forward! (and faster and cheaper!) I know how this feels!
FORENSICA
Ana's flock - that sounds like a nightmare!! I have not heard about the pipe work, and our house is 50+ years old (but maybe the heating only few years old, don't know). I can not imagine to be without warm water for so long as you! How nasty. We are probably quite lucky, since it still works for water, just not the central heating. We are considering to survive another cold month or so and then maybe get a new boiler before winter so we do not waste the warranty during summer when it is not in use. Aunty e
You might remember that I had a little problem with my boiler (wailing, gnashing of teeth etc etc). I called out a big company, and they sent someone round pretty quickly and efficiently. In the end it turned out to be very easy to fix, but the chap who came by does freelance work as well, and quoted us around £1500 for a whole new combi boiler and associated gubbins. Now I don't want a combi, and my old boiler's still working, but I did keep his number if you'd like it? He was really nice and I'm sure he could quote you a decent price for a new boiler. Obviously he's corgi registered and all that.

Slim
Our boiler stopped last week, I have a thing about plumbers I am also a electrician by trade (but don't do this as a job) so quite handy with my hands! I phoned British Gas at they do a fixed fee repair they said that they are so busy in my area they can't take the job! Got talking to my dad about it and he said that same thing happond to his boiler it was a thing called a Thermocoil and it cost me £6 to repair my boiler! and about half hours work! It was so blantent that this thing had burnt out I am more than happy the boiler is safe!
FORENSICA
Slim, that is great! You see, I do not really believe any repair person since they can say anything to get the most money from you. Maybe I am a bit too paranoid.
