soft shell eggs in newish layer why

Recommended Posts

one of my new layers has laid a softie the past two days :? . They have free access to grit and i put limestone flour in their food. I'm hoping it's just a beginners blip. Is frustrating though when her first three eggs were perfect.

I wouldn't worry about it if they are just coming into lay - this is normal and should settle down on it's own. As long as they are getting plenty of layers feed and access to grit they should be OK, and giving extra calcium via limestone flour or a commercial calcium tonic won't do any harm. I think Shellstim has now been discontinued - try limestone flour from ebay. :D
