BooBoo
I would just like to say that my g-pigs have been on megazorb for a week now and I can't recommend it enough Recently Phoebe got a wheezy chest (probably due to my pet shop changing to a cheaper nasty wood shavings). Anyway, as you can imagine - trip to vet, cautionary anti-biotics, being told she may get worse etc etc was very upsetting - so I gave up on wood shavings forever and moved to megazorb. Benefits 1) Cheaper - I can get away with using little, with the same absorbancy 2) no risk to their health 3) easier to clean out 4) less waste 5) G-pigs love it! They ran round their cage for about an hour using a squeak only previoulsy used for cucumber
Chooks Aloud
What is this megazorb? Karen
BooBoo
Its a really absorbant and dust free type of bedding. I think it was designed originally for stables (so it can more than cope with 2 small g-pigs ) I think its made from wood pulp which is heated up to remove the moisture, moulds, spores and bacteria. The result looks a bit like cat litter, but really soft. It is recommended for guinea pigs because of their tendancy to get chest infections from dusty wood shavings and saw dust (as mine did). Chooks Aloud
I've never seen it before - where do you get it from? How much is it? Thanks Karen
BooBoo
I bought it from a local riding/ tack shop - but if you google it, you should be able to find a local supplier. My large bag cost me £5.00 - I think it will last over 5 clean outs of my g-pigs (very big) cage.
SarahCavy
I use it and it's brilliant!
redhotchick
I use Megazorb for my chickens. It's been ok.
BooBoo
Hi Cathy I still use wood chips in my eglu - how much megazorb do you need for the eglu? and how long does it last? Doesn't it blow all over the garden?
redhotchick
I've been using it for about a month. I have a little plastic skirt around my eglu. (search the gallery for "redhotchick" for picture) It's about 165mm high, and I have a plastic cover on the run. Surprisingly it doesn't seem to blow around. I have about an inch covering. I rake it all out each week and put it in the compost heap. I've got about half the bag left. I've not used Aubiose or Hemcore because I can't get hold of them round here yet, I'd like to try something different next time, as a comparison. It does tend to clump and form quite a hard layer, maybe that's because I'm not putting it deep enough? Edit - Sorry meant to say - Hi BooBoo! Hi Everyone! The Dogmother
That's interesting news. I use Aubiose (hemp horse bedding) for my chooks and bunnies, if I still had GPs, I would probably use it for them too.
Yorkshire Pudding
I've used both Hemcore and Megazorb. When our pigs were inside the Megazorb was fantastic because there's no dust and it is soft on little piggy feet too. The Hemcore was a bit rougher but still effective. I use Hemcore in the chickens' run because I find it composts better - Megazorb is so absorbent that it dried out one of my compost heaps and I've had to keep watering it! redhotchick
LOL yes, I've drenched my compost heap with the hose pipe! The Megazorb has been great and the girls seem to really like it. I've just got some Aubiose, so I'll be able to compare soon.
