GEB
Yesterday our feather pulling took a turn for the worse (read "I hate my chicken") and I have a chicken with an injured bottom. I'm on my way out to get some purple spray but have some questions: Can i spray it on raw areas or do they need to scab over a bit first? Is it safe to spray on the vent? Should I give them all a purple bum so she doesn't stand out? And finally, not about the spray, but if the injury has scabbed over is it ok for her to be in with the others or will they still peck it? Any help from those in the know would be appreciated. chelsea
yes all ok on raw areas as it is an antiseptic, so it will help with any infection/inflamation anyway. ok to spray on the vent/bum area - just dont spray "up the vent" if you get what i mean. Tina C
I wouldn't worry about spraying them all, just the one that needs it. As well as being antiseptic, the purple should 'camoflage' the wound (or scab) so she should be OK but you will just have to keep an eye on them to make sure its doing the trick. And beware when you spray it - wear old clothes and gloves - it stains!
LJ's Chooks
err old clothes and away from your eglu... i've got a purple cube that has the grey areas purple sprayed to... works well on the chooks not so well on the cube! Good luck... i hope things settle. We used stockholm tar as well as purple spray.... which is really disgusting - you can get it in a spray form too. we had neck pecking ... not sure if you can use it on vents too? It stinks, and my coat still stinks 2 weeks later and after several washes. the chooks dont like it either. good luck!
