The joy and pain of adopting ex-batts

Recommended Posts

Sadly we lost Brenda this morning. She was always a bit of a sickly one but always seemed to recover after a day or so. Not this time unfortunately, despite our and the vet's best efforts.

We also lost Brian (she was a girl - blame the hubby for needing assumed maleness!) on 4 April. She probably had kidney trouble.

Both had only been with us 8 months and both were good characters. We really tried our best for them and we have a super vet who understands and always tries his best. But sometimes it's just their time and I think both of them were simply exhausted by their previous life. At least they had a few months of freedom, digging for worms, sunshine (well, sort of just lately!) and dust baths.

By contrast our remaining 3 ex-batts (and 1 Pepperpot) are absolutely full of beans and we still get such a kick out of watching them go about their business. The ex-batts really enjoy life - they literally race each other to be first out of the eglu in the morning :D They are a joy and we wouldn't have it different.

We will adopt some more girls in time because giving a hen a second chance is such a worthwhile thing to do, despite the setbacks.
