munchkin
Hi everyone I've been reading about porridge. My chooks don't seem to like the pellets supplied by omlet. I have added to the pellets, garlic powder, bokashi bran and diatom. Margot is laying eggs now - 4 in 4 days and her appetite is larger. I have tried adding warm water from the kettle so it has the consistency of porridge but it seems to go really hard. Any ideas Thanks
moomin
Try adding the water in stages. Add some hot water to cover the pellets, wait until the pellets absorb the water (about 5 minutes), give a stir round, then add a splash more water and leave a bit longer. Carry on doing this until you get a porridgy consistency. Unless it's something you're adding that makes it go hard. I don't add anything to mine at the moment 'cos they're fussy little devils
Blackrocksrock
I usually crumble in the heel of a loaf - brown and soak it too and add some porridge oats to the pellet porridge and sometimes if they are really lucky some sweetcorn mixed in - they love it - add some cold water once its gone hard and it will be cool enough for the girls. Mutrix Farmers
Just sounds like you need to add a bit more water, it soaks up a surprising amount.

Chuckov
Aaah - that explains it. I had a similar porridge problem (went rock hard) and the girlies wouldn't touch it until it had been out in the rain for 3 days (and presumably had softened a bit )
Suzie
Mine only seem to eat it if it is a bit harder - if I add too much water they ignore it! I leave the water to soak into the pellets and then mix it up so it it goes into clumps. Mine don't seem to like dried mixed corn or raisins either so maybe they're just weird.
