Poorly Chicken Ish!

Recommended Posts

Hello, I've been worried about one of my hens for a while now but couldn't find out what the problem was....she has been eating/drinking and sleeping fine, her poos have been a bit watery but everything else seemed fine...forgot to mention that she hasn't been laying since November, didn't think too much of that as my other 2 girls stopped over the winter too.

Anyway today checked her vent etc and she has poo all around it and the base of her feathers each had a white fungal looking cluster.

Any ideas, it looked quite nasty. :(

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

have you checked for lice?

Lice lay their eggs in clusters at the base of the feathers. if your chook has lice this could get her "down" and put her off laying. have you wormed them recently? If not I would just give them a good check over and worm them and they will be fine. :)

If she is eating and drinking she sounds fine.

i'm worried about Ellie and would appreciate guidance. She doesn't seem herself. i made weetabix with water as the evening treat today - usually Ellie is the first for any sort of food but she didn't seem bothered. The other 2 have been pecking around as usual but Ellie has been perched on the side of the compost bin not really interested in much. I have picked her up to check her over. She has clearly had a runny poo as there is a white streak down her tail feathers but her vent seems otherwise ok. I can't see any trace of lice. She has started to moult i think - she has a small bald patch on her breastbone. When i came to shutting up tonight Thelma and Louise had gone into the Eglu as usual but Ellie was still on the compost bin and seemed to be settling down there for the night. I picked her up and carried her to the Eglu and then she pottered in with the other 2. She isn't a particularly good layer and never has been. She has issues with soft shell eggs but i thought was was probably immaturity - we got her as POL at the beginning of March but the other 2 are the same age but seem to have less problems. Is she just having a bad day and i'm being neurotic or should i really worry?

Fionachuckyegg....what you describe definitely sounds like clusters of lice eggs. Why not give her a dusting with Barrier Louse powder? Put some in the nesting box too.

KitG have you wormed your hens recently? At a guess I would say it sounds as if Ellie might have some wrigglers on board. Why not try some Flubenvet?

I have wormed them recently but with Vermex which the forum tells me might not have been my best bet. I will try and get some flubenvet. I have some lice powder and will dust Ellie and the nesting box too just for good measure! This morning Ellie has laid another soft shell egg - perfect looking but when you pick it up the "shell" is like lycra instead of hard. She has then headed for the grub clearly hungry. Thanks for the advice.

Hi, sorry to hear about your poorly girl..

You should be able to find louse powder in any horse supply shop or country store like SCATS in your area? Just try Yellow Pages.. failing that there are several good website such as Flytesofancy.

I'm new to chickens but use the same stuff for horses!

Hope this helps :D

We bought Johnston's anti mite and lice spray - really easy to use and very effective - just scoosh (sp?) some at the base of the feathers at their vent and under their wings. Make sure you don't inhale it yourself. Repeat after 3 or 4 days and that should kill them all. We bought the spray in a big pet shop at the budgie section.
