lisaroo2
Having got our girls Saturday just gone, we've decided that this Saturday is THE day. THE day when we let them into the rest of the garden. Having watched Daisy today I reckon she's the one that's gonna make the bid for freedom. She's been up and off the perch in her run like a jet propelled missile, and she's had both of her wings clipped. The plan is....to put the omlet netting around a smallish area with the eglu in the middle, then stand back and open the door and wait and see what happens...I am abit concerned that Daisy will be the one to try and make a fly for it... oh help. It's driving me crazy at the mo as I can't really spend much time with them as I've got this flu-ey virusy thing and am frightened they could get it. Have been wearing rubber gloves to handle anything of theirs. Am I being TOO cautious? Lisa (new mum to The Staffs Lasses Daisy Maisie 1st TODAY!!! Egluntyne
I've been at deaths door all week and despite having to put up with a bit of healthy neglect for a couple of days (they were fed and watered and eggs collected...that's all) mine have been fine. So far! I wouldn't worry too much. If they can eat a slug........ I hope you feel better soon.
chickenlass
I would just make sure that the netting isn't too near the Eglu as I can remember one of mine using the top of the run as a runway to run along and launch herself off over the netting. I bet they will be fine otherwise
lisaroo2
Hey Eglutine, have you got this lurgy thing too then??? If you feel anything like I do then I can commiserate. Hope you feeling better soon... I'm desperate to go and spend time with the girls but don't want em catching this rotten flu-ey thing. peanut12
I had a kid come running to my classroom today to say the chickens had escaped from their netted area. They had been watching them from classroom window next door and apparently this is what happened: One chicken, Stella, trod on the netting to walk it down to a suitable height and then 4 others all jumped over. You have to admire their teamwork. The only thing missing was a Mel Gibson voice over.
redhotchick
I reckon she's the one that's gonna make the bid for freedom. It unbalances them you see. Hope you feel better soon.
chickenanne
I would think it extremely unlikely that your chickens could catch your flu. Few virus' can cross species barriers between humans and birds. The H5N1 strain can currently only go from birds to humans via very close contact with pigs, for example (which is part of the reason why infections in humans are reported mainly from rural Asia, where subsistence level farmers keep both in close contact). I wouldn't worry about this; use some common sense precautions and enjoy the chickens.

Abbey Road Girl
Sorry, Lisa, I think I was the one that mentioned that chickens can catch some bugs from us. They do get sniffles, for example, but this is really not a big deal. Remember that they probably existed on this planet long before we did. I hope that you and Egluntine are feeling much better today, hopefully all better!
