Pink Ladies
One of our chickens sadlyy died last week end. Today another chicken Babs, is still sneezing even after having Citricidal for a week. I have phoned the vet and he thinks she has Mycoplasma infection and needs an antibiotic injection. Our other chicken needs to be injected too to stop infection. It now seems that this was the likely cause of Betty's death as one of the signs can be lamenes. I have told the seller where we purchased the hens from and he was very surprised. Although we love them I am really starting to regret getting them as it has been very stressful for the family. Has anyone else had experience of this infection? Cazjohn
Sorry no experience of this but you really have had some bad luck Any news?
theherd123
Im sorry to hear you are having such a rough start to chicken keeping. You were right to call the breeder and it may be beneficial if you could ring them again and see if they will agree to pay the vets fees for your other 2 girls to be injected as it does seem like your girls were infected before they were sold to you. The anti-biotics will no doubt do the trick but do keep up with the citracidel too. Keep us updated on how the chooks are doing.
Egluntyne
I agree with Emma. Many "back yard" breeders don't bother with vaccinations as it is too expensive. Maybe your chap was one of these. I am so sorry that you have had such a roten start to your chicken keeping. Please don't let it put you off, though.
Phosphorus
Sorry to hear of the infection - hope it all sorts out with the antibiotics. You are in the same region as me - can I ask which breeder you got your chickens from?
Ain't Nobody Here
Sorry you've had such a rotten time Pink Ladies . Don't let it put you off chicken keeping - you've been really unlucky but it can be so easy and such fun when you have healthy girls. The Dogmother
I'm sorry to hear that. I also had a hen with mycoplasma... like yours, she was bought from a very reputable supplier (I got the money back for vets fees). I had to inject her daily with Tylan 200 and she lived to tell the tale. Myco can often affect their egg-laying ability and Ruby Tuesday laid infrequent torpedo eggs thereafter, but lived for another 3 years I am lucky to have an excellent chicken vet. Pink Ladies
After Betty's death and Babs sneezing both Babs and Ruby were injected by the vet with Tylan. The next day they were very poorly but the vet assured me that this was due to a reaction from the jab and them feeling sore from the needle. We were really worried as they looked like they were going to die to. The next day they were charging about like new and Bab's runny nose has dried up. The vet is wonderful and even asked me to call him with an update. Looks like everything is now going to be fine and we can enjoy life with our two girls. We aren't going to replace Betty as yet and just see how it goes.
The Dogmother
That's good news Best let the girls recover before the stress of introducing new birds to the flock.

Egluntyne
That is good news. I'd take Claret's tip though and leave it a little while before introducing more hens.......just to be on the safe side.
