Troy
Hi all Has anyone had problems with the height of the cube ladder and their pekins/bantams? I ask because at the weekend we visited the Omlet stand at the Grand design show in London and thought that the ladder of the cube was awfully steep and possibly too short and tricky for our coming Pekins. The lady there said it wouldnt be a problem but I thought I'd ask you all and possibly have a little ramp made in advance. What do you think?? The Dogmother
I have pekins in my herd and they climb all over everything in the garden, so they don't have a problem with climbing and flapping up, but I think that the big rungs on the ladder might pose a problem for their little feet to grip, but that could easily be solved by securing some non-slip material around the rungs with a couple of cable ties. You can buy a non-slip sort of rubberised mesh in lots of hardware stores - they sell it to stop ornaments sliding and the like.
Bondinho
My pekin does it easily, she runs up it sometimes with just a little flap of her wings if needed! It will be fine

Aunty e
My pekins have no trouble with it at all. They just bounce their way up and fly down in the morning. I was worried about the distance between the ladder and the ground at first, but it was comletely fine.
Troy
Thank you all so much. I guess I shall have to wait and see - which is what my problem is!!! I cant wait for the waiting to be over! The girls are coming soon along with a lilac cube and I have to say I have become one extremely neurotic chicken obsessed mother of two!! Aunty e I've noticed that you have pekins and larger hens in your flock. Are they together in your cube? and have you had any problems with small vs large? ( We are hoping for 2 calder rangers too and they will be younger than the 3 Pekins)
Aunty e
We've never had any problems, although the pekins can be very bossy with new chickens, especially young pullets. We always try to make sure we have at least three bantams though, as they like to hang round in a flock.
SAB
Troy - thanks for asking this question as I was going to post similar - also getting chooks (mix of bantams and hybrids) in a couple of weeks. Have been advised that they should be OK together as raised together - I'm sure yours will be fine if together from young enough age. Troy
Good. I feel better that someone else is doing the bantam and hybrid thing. Theres been mixed feelings on this and I've been quite worried. So went to Thornes in Stotfold and met with Frank their chicken guy to double check as I think he knows more about chickens than 10 of me ever will! He assured me that providing they are all of similar age or Pekins slightly older when first introduced there should'nt be a problem. He also said popping them all in the house for 24hrs and then letting them out in the run makes them all feel like the 'new girl' so they generally behave. I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I can imagine all sorts of horrors but a big thank you for yours and Aunty e s reassurances.
