Ducking down

Recommended Posts

As I've said before, Queeny has started laying now. And as is common knowledge, most hens will duck down, or crouch, just as they are coming into the time when they will lay their first egg.

I have noticed that Queeny will duck down for Vivienne, but not for me!! Anyone else suffer from this? I've never had a chook do this before....

I have two layers and two non-layers. For what it's worth, none of them have crouched for me, but since free ranging in the last week all have begun flirting.

When let out, they have become more and more willing to brush by me and allow themselves to be stroked, however briefly, before scampering off.

I think the last line in Casablanca was, "This could be the start of a great relationship". 8)

They don't all crouch for humans.

Of my eight hens, only three are in love with me at present (although the Buff Cochin is still immature and there is hope). The ones who don't crouch for me are probably the ones with the most sense.

A fourth hen (my big old Cochin) eventually crouches if I chase her, and adopts a "Better get it over with" attitude. She is the best cuddle, as she weighs 9lb.

All four of my young hens crouch for the three chief hens.

One hen, my Bluebelle won't crouch for me or for any hen either. She is also careless about where she lays her eggs, so I suppose she just doesn't want chicks.

:lol: @ your chickens Gallina! They are all so different and funny aren't they? Top chicken Big Bertha will crouch for me, but when I got her she was supposed to be quite antisocial. And she does seem to like a cuddle - she is a hefty pepperpot and very cuddly! All the others except Rosie crouch reluctantly for me, but very quickly for Bertha! I keep tripping over Rosie because she rushes up to me and crouches at my feet whenever I go outside :?
