Woodchick
My green cube and three chickens arrived lthis morning and the Omlet chap put them in the cube for me so they could get out themselves - but they won't! I nudged one out but she came back in later and now they are all in the cube itself. I am unable to reach them easily throught the roof and don't want to take the back off whilst on my own. Will they come out of their own accord? They haven't eaten or drunk anything.
Laura & CTB
Give them time to settle in - they've had a van journey and a brand new home to cope with - it's all very strange for them. Just keep an eye on them, they'll soon find they're feet and start mooching about Welcome to the forum too.
Tessa the Duchess
Don't worry, they are just aclimatising themselves to the new environment. They will come out when they are ready. If you are concerned that they are not eating or drinking anything put a dish of food and water inside the cube itself. Also they may not be familiar with the ladder arrangement, you may have to help them down and show them what to do. Tessa
Woodchick
Panic over. I have just been out and all three climbed - somewhat inelegantly - down the ladder. One has even been in and out again. Am relieved they are eating - just the glug (and cat introductions) to go! Many thanks for the sensible advice.
Keanie Bean
They'll be pecking at your feet before you know it, give them a few days to settle in. Enjoy. Sarah.x
Phosphorus
Mine did that - spent over 2 hours in the cube just looking out the door. I thought they would never come out but then they appeared late afternoon. It really worked for me though because by the time they did come out they knew exactly where to go at bedtime. All of them took themselves to the cube at bedtime and have never looked back since, despite the difficulty with the ladder to start with - now they half climb half fly up it
surferdog
Mine stayed in the eglu until about 3 o'clock on their second day - still couldn't find the eglu at bedtime though (errr - it's that big pink thing over there..... )
Woodchick
I'm so relieved. Cats seem unbothered, everyone has drunk and eaten and all three put themselves to bed without any problems. Maybe that 3 hours in the cube was worth it! A successful and happy first day with chickens. Good to join the club. Am leaving husband to look after them for weekend; he seems rather stressed but I'm am sure all will be well!
Christian
Hello Woodchick and welcome to the forum. Glad they are settling in nicely.
Abbey Road Girl
Yes, woodchick, went through something similar. Did a bit of gentle prodding with a broom from behind to encourage them down the Cube ladder to find food and drink on Day One. The responsibility is really scarey, but the hens do their part brilliantly. Welcome!
