Re hatching under a hen

Recommended Posts

Hi there, we've got a broody hen and we're thinking of getting some eggs from a friend of ours who also has a cockerel to see if we/she could hatch any. Obviously she'll need somewhere away from the others to sit on them, I gather a rabbit hutch or similar should be OK. Am I right in thinking that if they're hatched under a hen they won't need a lamp to keep them warm? Allegedly we're now into early summer but it's still darned chilly here, and do mother hens ever reject their chicks like sheep can reject lambs? Only I'd have to make sure I had somewhere for reject chicks in that case.

I can't speak for chickens because i've never done that before but we do have wild ducks on our pond and the mother duck always has them under her to keep them warm so i'm guessing that would be the same as chickens.

I would get a seperate hutch / chicken house as they will need to be kept away from the other chickens when they hatch. Not sure about the rejecting part though sorry.

Hopefully someone with experience in this will come along shortly :D
