how long till first eggs

Recommended Posts

I've been sifting through posts and have found the shouts of glee about first eggs but they don't seem to say how long from delivery of eglu to first egg. It says 4-6 weeks on the omlet site but I wondered if you had any "real" times i.e. am I likely to be more the 4 week end or the 6 week end of the time scale?

Our eglu and hens arive next wednesday and i'm conscious that the kids will be expecting immediate eggs (even though I've told them this probably won't happen) For a 4 year old 6 weeks is a looooooooong time.

Cheers

xx

Some people have been lucky enough to have eggs on the first day others have waited weeks.

We waited about 3 weeks, one of our girls had quite a good red comb when we got her which is an indication that they are getting near to laying, but we still waited for 3 weeks and the others were not far behind.

You can tell if they are ready to lay if they squatt down in front of you if you approach them from behind, they do this for the cockerel apparently.

Our gingernut ranger layed her first egg 3 weeks after she arrived and then about a week later our miss pepperpot joined in. They were a bit irregular for the first week but since then they have laid every day bar 2 when mavis took a rest!. That first egg is well worth waiting for though!

We're nearly 3 weeks in and no eggs yet. Butch has the largest comb although this is still small by comparison to some photos I've looked at. But it is red and she keeps blushing! I'm hoping this is a good sign. We can't wait - its nearly as good as Christmas. Oh okay it is as good as Christmas.

We are 3 weeks and 3 days in and still no eggs :( Babs the Miss Pepperpot has had her red comb since she arrived, but so far nothing from any of them.

The children are worried that they may be fake chickens  However, my daughter has gone away for a week with the school today and I reckon sods law that we will have an egg this week. She has made us promise that we won't eat it until she gets back on Friday and she is going to phone us in the week to see if they have laid

2 weeks and still no luck. We seem to be getting quite a lot of orange poos though. It seems to say that this could be something to do witht hem getting ready to lay. Petunia is very red round the eyes now and Pecky dashes to the end of the cage to see you and sits down to be stroked now. She's every so friendly. She's my little girl's chicken and greatly loved!

Opal was our first to lay at just over three weeks with Pearl not far behind! But their combs were still pink and not red and none of them crouched before laying  I must admit I thought we would be closer to the six week mark as they all had tiny combs and seemed really young, just goes to show...you never can tell. :D
