We've had our lovely chickens for about a month now and they've just started laying Whilst the eggs are perfect in every way, they are a little small compared to the sizes that people have posted on their signatures. The eggs are about 40-50g each (sorry, don't have very accurate kitchen scales!). Is this because the girls are still young? I'm only really asking in case it's because I'm not feeding them enough/correctly etc etc. I'm trying very hard to be a good chicken owner and am getting increasingly paranoid about everything! (I thought I would tell you a little bit about our egg layers to put your mind at ease) We had our first egg only a few weeks back and I was surprised as it was huge and a double yolker!! This came from Maisy though and when our chickens arrived we were told she was older and quite large for her age. Our other two birds, Martha and Maggie started to lay shortly after but we have found their laying not to be as consistant as Maisy's. The eggs are not as big either. Martha's eggs are a small/medium size however, over the last few days her eggs have increased in size and frequency which is good news. I am sure your eggs will do the same, they just need time. I have to say Maggies eggs are tiny. (I think she is only laying so she doesn't feel left out! - Teehee!) She is definatly the youngest, she doesn't even have a full crest yet. She is the smallest bird and her eggs are to small to eat at the moment but I have every hope in the next few weeks the size will increase. GEB Posted May 28, 2008 Share Posted May 28, 2008 I've asked about this before as well. I've only had my ladies three months. They are all laying every day now and the eggs are gorgeous. However I wouldnt say they've increased in size much over this time. Still only about 50g most days with the very occasional double yolker. I did think the eggs would be bigger by now, but I'm happy anyway cos they're so yummy! Abbey Road Girl Posted May 28, 2008 Share Posted May 28, 2008 Two of mine began laying 11 days after they were delivered with their Cube. Now all have joined in. The eggs were small at 35g, then they jumped a dress size to 45g and today I was amazed to find one that was 75g. It was enormous! superjules Posted May 29, 2008 Share Posted May 29, 2008 They do get bigger. Magpie started laying at Easter and her eggs have increased from around 38g to 54g. Sylvie started laying on 1st April and her eggs started out at 50g and are now 65g. My skylines are still under 50g. My old girl, Daffodil, normally lays 72g - she's nearly 2 years old. Her eggs are sometimes too big to fit in standard size eggboxes.
