GEB
Having read various posts on here where people say how long a sack of pellets lasts them, I wonder if my girls need to go on a diet? I have four hybrids, all of whom are pretty small. They are all laying. They get through a 20kg sack of food in a month. They also get some form of treat (cabbage, broccoli, corn etc) every day and are able to freerange on average for three hours a day or all day at the weekends. When they free range they don't eat any pellets. I get the impression other peoples pellets last them longer than this?
surferdog
Our sack of layers is only lasting longer because our chickens don't actually like them! They will eat them if nothing else available or if cunningly disguised as porridge. They also get through a large bowl of treats every day (mainly veggies, rice or similar) and a bunch of greens each morning plus whatever they find out free-ranging. If they're not getting fat I wouldn't worry - I think making eggs uses up a lot of calories
..lay a little egg for me
Yeah...20 kg per month is what my 4 get through. Some of it ends on the floor though and try as I might I can't stop this. Tried reducing the gap at the bottom of the tube feeder to slow down 'delivery' but then none comes through at all. When I raise it again, the girls just chuck the pellets on the floor (I think they're searching through it to see if there might be any nicer things hidden in it...there's not but they keep looking!). Egluntyne
Sounds about right to me.
Tessa the Duchess
Sounds about the same as mine get through. Longer daylight hours equal more time for eating:) Tessa
