Cambridge Chickens

Recommended Posts

Hello, everyone. First time posting on the forums, but been reading them all for weeks now.

We're getting our (red) Eglu next Wednesday (I can hardly wait) and was wondering if anyone knows of good places to get chickens/bantams from round here?

I've found Two Pots Bantams, which is just down the road from us.

And somewhere called Cambridge Poultry, but - much to husband's eye rolling - I have my heart set on a couple of Lavender Pekins, but no where seems to have any.

Any pekins at all actually come to think of it :(

Anyways, thank you in advance for looking, these really are the friendliest forums I have ever read.

We're in Hardwick loopylou, where did you get your chickens from?

I got them from a farm in Fulbourn. They didn't have the ones your looking for though I am afraid. :?

Thorne's doesn't have a website - they are still in the dark ages I'm afraid! - but their number is 01462 675767. Their chooks are fab, tip-top birds. Eyren and Sheik have had chooks from there too.

Oh - And me - made the mistake of going there after my hols - and guess what happened - we are up to 8 girls now - just waiting on some skylines now......

We went to Nott Cutts (could be any number of T's in there) in Horningsea and they had some beautiful girls. The lady there (Lynne) was really knowledgeable and could not do enough to help, so we'll be going there on Thursday to pick up 2 (possibly three if I can think of another name) lovely Hybrid Cuckoos.

No Pekins though, but she gets on well with her supplier, so will see what she has and let me know... she talked to us for nearly an hour and my head was spinning after... you think you know the basics from reading on the net and books, but then when someone is talking to you in real life about a subject they're so passionate about and you start to wonder if you should be allowed out of the house on your own, let alone keep chickens.

Thanks for those websites and suggestions, will go and have a look a those as well.

Notcutts - Grrrr - I have been to horningsea and they had a lone girl with chooks in a ridiculously small hutch thing. Fortunately or unfortunately I was on a work experience visit so couldn't raise any welfare questions. Cambridge Poultry in Bottisham are good. They had a good range of POL girls and I got my Bovans Nera and Speckledy from there.

welcome to the forum :)

we got our pekins from this place: www.westawaypoultry.co.uk (it is near rutland water)

they had allsorts, so worth giving them a ring maybe?

we actually started out to get lavender pekins, they are sooo pretty, aren't they? but there was only a trio available when we visited (definately did NOT want a cockerel!)

on westaway's website there is a guide to pekin colours - i think they are all adorable, and i am sure my daughter (7) would be quite happy to have one of every colour available

hope this helps, x

I was wondering where on Earth they would have put the chickens what with there little pet area, but they have an out door space near the restaurant, with a run that was about 8 feet wide and 15 feet long, I could have stood up in there (6 foot) with only minor bending down, so I was relieved to see them not all cooped up in a tiny area.

ooooh, more website, you people spoil me :)

They did have a small ish hutch thingy by the front door with a mum and some chicks in, but apparently they're let out for an hour or so before the shop opens and for a bit in the evening, so it didn't look too awful.

And none of them smelled, which our mean neighbour was worried about... I'm more worried about the chickens having to see her giant knickers on her washing line... might give them a fright.:shock:

Will give the Bottisham place a look... although for the life of me I can't think where it is ... god bless Google Maps
