how do you vaccinate against salmonella

Recommended Posts

I apologise in advance for the stupid Qs but...how do you stop your eggs getting salmonella? I'm newly pregnant and so obviously this is a real concern to me if I'm going to eat my own eggs (well, not MY own eggs clearly but my chickens' - when i get them - eggs.

Hybrids will be vaccinated already for their own protection as they all have the potential to end up in intensive farming systems where any kind of infection spreading has massive financial implications. It's worth double checking with the place you are buying them from what they are innoculated against though and if you are considering getting purebreeds it's much more hit and miss whether they are vaccinated or not.

You would have to pay to have your hens vaccinated: but I imagine that this would cost an awful lot of money.

Or you could just avoid eating the eggs while you are pregnant, or else boil them very hard.

(I am not an expert on salmonella: are there any symptoms in an affected hen, or are they otherwise well?)

Small breeders tend not to vaccinate as the vaccines have to be bought on large scales and it make it too expensive.

If you avoid products will raw egg such as home made mayonnaise or chocolate mousse you should be OK.

Why not ring you vet and see if they can advise.

Can you find a breeder nearby who has vaccinated hybrids?
