*mummy_hen*
Hi All, Just wondered if anyone knows where i could find a list or information on what products are made using non free-range eggs. Really want to cut out of our shopping list, but i know this goes further than battery eggs and non free range meat but is sometimes hard to know what other products contain them!! Thanks, Amy
Faye&Ant
I end up checking each label of everthing I buy and so it takes me ages to shop I found out the other day that seafood sticks contain egg and it doesn't say free range so I assume they are not I never thought to check the packet before I buy. I now find I am buying less and less from the supermarkets If I find a list I will forward it on Faye x
Mel (& Paul)
Try the Battery Hen Welfare Trust site - and particularly this page which allows you to down load lists http://www.bhwt.org.uk/caring-consumer.php The thing to think of is the hidden products - things that might have eggs in that you wouldnt expect Good luck
*mummy_hen*
Thanks - that link was really useful. It shocks me how many products do contain not only egg - but non free range egg but what shocks me even more is supermarkets/companies attitudes towards battery hens. It makes me furious that a company such as Tesco - the biggest supermarket name won't even consider removing battery eggs from their shelves, let alone their own branded producst!!! I must admit in the past i may have been a little nieive as to quite how many products they were in but would never knowingly have gone out and bought them!!! Mel (& Paul)
It's a bit of a minefield out there - for example Tescos do a salad nicoise sandwich with free range egg, but of course the mayonaise is made with egg and it doesnt say free range...... You'll soon get used to reading the lables and finding "good" products - and slowly but surely a lot of the manufactures are changing their ingredients with a bit of consumer pressure! Cinnamon
I have budged this over to this food friendly page Something that shocked me last week is that in M&S they do all free range eggs, & use free range eggs in their products BUT STILL DO NON FREE RANGE CHICKEN So, in effect you could buy a chicken salad sandwich with FR mayo & non FR chicken You would have thought with their current ad compaign that says how all their eggs are now FR that they could have got this glaring booby sorted
*mummy_hen*
No probs - i always get confused or forget and most of my posts just end up in chickens That does seem silly, especially as they are getting a lot of good press out of it as they are seen to be supporting the chickens!! We tend to buy a lot from our local farmers markets, etc. but there's always the need to pop to the supermarket. Just want to make sure i'm doing my bit though and not encouraging this awful 'business'.
