Steph101
You know what I mean, when there's just a small cupful in the bottom of the grub feeder, and they are having to reach in? I always sling it out at this point, because I worry they can't reach it at the bottom, and transfer it to a treat tray, and maybe mix it with some hot porridge, to save throwing it away. When I empty it out though, there's more in the bottom of the feeder than you think! Should I just wait till it's gone? What does everyone else do? Once it's in another container it gets damp, and ends up being thrown out anyway. Also, do you clean and disinfect your grub feeders before every top up? The Dogmother
Mine usually leave the dusty stuff in the bottom of my troughs, so I tip it into a bowl, add soem pellets and warm water to make a porrdige, which they wolf down. Waste not, want not. I was the feeders thoroughly, but don't bother disinfecting them. If you want to do that, then Virkon is good.
Steph101
Thanks Claret. I just tend to give them a good wash in Ecover, but I'll have a look at some Virkon for the future.
The Dogmother
I generaly use ecover or bio-d washing up liquid with a few drops of tea tree oil.
Cinnamon
My Bantams get right in to the Grub to eat the last bits
Hen Watch
On the odd occassion when I've been naughty and not put enough pellets in, I found my lot can eat every last s"Ooops, word censored!" from their grub feeder if they want to.
Egluntyne
Mine empty their grubs. They don't get a pudding until they have eaten their main course.

The Dogmother
My girls just leave the 'medicine' like garlic flakes, diatom amd eggshell. Like I said, I make it into porridge and they eat it all - just like tricking small children into eating their greens. I have several feeders, some are in glugs as they hold more and it can't be raked out, the others are in feeder troughs.
cathybc
I have been soft and keep mine topped up - but funnily enough today I dedided to leave them with the dregs. I might be in for a telling off when I get home..... and unless it gets extra dirty, I give the grub a proper clean once a week. Yet agin I am a lazy chook mummy! Abbey Road Girl
A word of caution here. It will depend, I think, on how high the Grub is attached. If you hang it too high, you'll find they have trouble accessing the pellets even when it's full. Mine did empty it once and then flung it onto the floor of the run in disgust! clucky clarke's
Hi, i have just brought a grub and glug and want to ask for advice . What is the best height to have them at? I have just read the previous posting about getting them at the right height will help them eat/drink form them. Also, my chooks seem to have stopped laying . We have had them nearly 3 weeks and got egg straight away, but these have now stopped. Is this normal? Only one of them stoops down on picking them up, the other 2 cheeky chooks just run off!! thanks alot, kelly.x
Abbey Road Girl
Hi Kelly, The height will depend on how big your hens are. I would say that the Grub should be placed so that the openings are at about the same height of their neck so they can feed at a comfortable level when the Grub is full but also can comfortably dip down when it's not. The Glug is different. It should be high enough so that the hens naturally have to raise their heads up to the nipples. Take some time to watch and see that the heights are right for your chickens. Then relax and enjoy!
