Christian
I originally got a Gingernut Ranger and 2 Pepperpots from Omlet. The two Pepperpots are completely different. Laverne is all black and Shirley is black and ginger - easy to tell apart. Good luck with your new chickens
Cooks
I do feel it would be nice for omlet to offer a third coloured hen though, maybe a white?? or the bluebelle?? this would help with the selection of three hens for children I think. I dont feel it important for them to get into different egg colours, but more for the point of children easily recognising them across the garden. I wasn't in the area though I checked. ..lay a little egg for me
Our speckledy came a bit later than the other three, about 3 days later, and she settled in absolutely fine, no arguments at all. It may have helped that she was laying already and the others weren't but most likely because they were all so new! So I think that if you can get your third very soon after the omlet ones there should be no problem. Cluckbok: my speckledy lays almost every day, smaller eggs than the black rocks and goldline but so shiny and beautiful. We have had some double yolkers from her too, but they are often a surprise as the eggs are only a little bigger than her usual ones, whereas the double-yolkers from the others are huge! I've heard they can get fat and lazy in their second year (I suppose because they are a maran cross) but maybe that will make yours easier to catch?! christmasoompa
Thanks again all. I like the idea of just getting 3 hens from a local breeder but not sure how I could explain to my 3 year old that Ginger and Mrs Pepperpot are being replaced with something else!! She's already seen lots of photos and is expecting them, and none of our local breeders seem to stock them so that could be a bit tricky. We'll figure it out though! I definitely want 3 different breeds as I think it would be lovely and would also help the children tell them apart. Off to Google for more breeders to see what they've got! ..lay a little egg for me
I believe that Mrs Pepperpot is the same as a Black Rock and Gingernut Ranger is the same as Bovans Goldline (or at least very similar). Can someone confirm? So you might find local breeders that have these. But as I said, if you can get your third within a couple of days of the omlet ones, then they should get on OK. Is that near you? They have Black Stars and a Gold Stars (called Meadowsweet Rangers) that are so similar to Pepperpots and Rangers that your 3 yr old won't be at all disappointed. They are too far from me, but I have spoken to the woman there, and she is lovely and very helpful. Says she will have many more chickens and breeds available starting end of June.
