I have seen links to a poultry supplier at milton earnest in Beds. I wondered if anyone had been there and what it is like, do they have a good supply of Hens. I would love a couple more! The website is not working though.

I went there in September to buy some feed. They had quite a posh website and I was expecting a hen emporium - in reality there was a caravan, a shed and some chicken houses in a field. He seemed ok, in an odd sort of way, and I didn't look at the chickens so can't advise you on that. The website has been down since that so I don't know if he's still there.

I have heard of Bobkan, but don't have first hand experience of them so I can't comment. Thorne's in Letchworth on the Herts/Beds border is fab. No website though.

 

Hopefully someone with experience of Bobkan will be along soon.

Thanks, Bedford is 20 mins from here so I might go and have a sniff around. I have been going to Thornes which I love . Got my silver nick, maran cuvree and rhode star from there. If I go to bobkat I will let you know what I think. However if it is just a caravan etc I might be slightly wary of buying hens from them, I would rather have a properly established business.

Wherever you get new hens from, please make sure you quarantine them so they can't bring any parasites or diseases to your existing chooks. Frank and Karl would go at you otherwise!!

Ooh, I didnt know about that Superjules, how long for?? I'm quite new to all of this!

Ideally two weeks. I suppose it depends on your circumstances and what alternative accommodation you have in place for them, but if I brought in a new chook which had, for instance, a contagious respiratory infection, it could cause me a shedload of money and heartache to treat 10 poorly chooks.

Yes good point. I'm sure we can work out a way to keep them apart for a couple of weeks. I hadn't thought about it before and didn't do it when we introduced our Thornes hens to our growers (now 15 weeks) which we got as part of a hatching experiment in my sons school. They all seem OK though thank goodness. Lucky the boy is really enjoying himself though which is a worry, we will probably have to separate him.

A little late in my reply but just joined

 

Bobkan is a great bloke. Bought 3 black rock 15 months ago from him my first hens and never looked back. He was exstremly helpful and a real down to earth chap earning a living unlike some of these new poultry breeders greedy for your cash. I and am now looking for two light sussex hope hes still around
