christmasoompa
Well, as the title says, we had a very exciting phone call from Omlet earlier to say that they have a delivery slot on Monday which has become available so would we like our Eglu and chooks early. The answer was, needless to say, a resounding yes!! But when they phoned back an hour later to tell me the timeslot, I asked if I could add some things to the order and they said no as it had already been processed so was too late! Argghhhh!! So I now have to do a mad dash to a local poultry supplier this weekend to buy any essentials before they arrive, so wondered if any of you could give me any tips on what to buy? What do I definitely need to buy for their arrival, if anything? Thanks all.
Lewis
What have you got included in the order already?
christmasoompa
What have you got included in the order already? Sorry, should have said (far too excited to think straight!). Just the 'standard' package i.e. Eglu, food, chooks, etc. Thought we'd have plenty of time to think about what extras we wanted and to add them to the order but it turns out that isn't the case. Won't be getting those extra roosting bars we'd planned on after reading the advice on here but hey!
moochoo
As long as you have food, I wouldn't panic. You can get other stuff when you have time. If you want to buy some ' essentials' I would suggest poultry grit for calcium and digestion and your bedding of choice such as Hemcore. Don't worry everything you need will arrive with your eglu. Egluntyne
Moochoo is right....you won't need much else to start with, although I would recommend a metal bin to store your pellets. You can get other stuff if and when you need it. You would be bankrupt otherwise. Roll on Monday.
Hen Watch
Food and water are the essentials. My Omlet delivery was chooks, eglu+run, shade & feed. I didn't buy anything else for a few weeks. So I wouldn't worry too much. I then got, poultry grit, corn (as a treat only), auboise bedding (for nest box - but could use shredded paper). Now I have a list as long as your arm of other stuff I got over the last 12 months. Probably not essential but nice to have.
Lapinou
I'd agree with the others. We ordered the basic package, but because DH's dad was buying it for us, we added in a load of extras too I can see now, having spoken at length with the omlet man who brought them that they're kind of 'having them for when we need them' type things, rather than 'must have them before you start' things. We did get a metal bin for the feed as *everyone* we spoke to said that would be important, but other than that, the rest of our stuff is in the shed, to be explored/used as and when, but I can't see us needing it any time soon. (oh yes, we did get hold of some straw from my farmer friend for the nesting box but again, doesn't come from omlet anyway!) HTH
