Lapinou
Should I be worried? Millie in particular, but also Princess Aurora this morning, seem to not want to come out at all. They're fairly happy if we life them out and carry them round to the front of the run, and will hang around for a short while, but then find their way back there before long. Wendy's spending her whole time on her own! Is there something I'm not doing right?
Lapinou
FUMOP - just took Millie out from the egg port for the children to stroke and put her back in at the end of the run and Wendy tried to assert her superiority with a couple of pecks. Normal, I guess, but it couldn't be that she's frightening Millie and Princess Aurora enough to make them hide in the eglu all day could it? Will they get enough to eat if Wendy's being a meany? Gamebird
No, I should think they are absolutely fine. Mine did the same thing when I first got them. It's a new big world out their and they're just getting used to their surroundings. They will also be establishing you is who in the pecking order. I'm sure they will soon settle in and come out when they feel brave enough.
Lapinou
Thank you for reassuring me. Going out for some of today and didn't want to leave them if there was something I needed to do for them!
Egluntyne
You are doing fine. Don't worry about them.....they are as unused to this as you are and need time to get used to a new environment and routine. Give them a week and all will be different. Gallina
It takes weeks for new hens to settle down and become lively, interested, and interesting. I am always surprised when I get new ones just how quiet (and, dare I say it, even dull) they are at first. It soon changes. (For those who don't know what FUMOP means, I have just looked it up and it is "Following up my own post". I must remember that, as I do it a lot.) xScrunchee
Thanks for that Gallina-I was wondering and you saved me having to look it up
Lapinou
Sorry about the 'FUMOP' - I use the internet far too often They've been in all day but have all been out together for about an hour now, so I'm much happier now. They're all lovely to watch (and I'm very excited to hear they may get even more fun to watch as they settle in!). Millie is getting the most handling as she's the one who spends the most time in the nesting box - she's very clearly getting used to it so I'm just aware we need to work on the other two over the next week, ready for when they have their first taste of free-ranging! Thanks for all the support and encouragement
