Lapinou
Any ideas of how we can teach one of our chickens (Princess Aurora) not to peck people? She's gone for us a few times now - only today! - and just pecked DD1 fairly badly. We haven't fed her out of our hands as a precaution, but obviously she still thinks we're food! Any thoughts? Or is the only way the children and most of the chickens can be out together to keep Princess Aurora in the run?
Hen Watch
Give them some time. My girls pecked everything for the first month or so. They pecked my fingers when I opened the run, toenails, stitching on shoes/jeans...... basically trying everything out to see if it was food. They gave my 1 year old nephew a good peck too (but he soon got over it). Now, they just don't bother to peck at all. They soon work out what is and is not food. Mine never peck now. Only very, very, very ocassionally when I wear a certain sparkly watch, Henrietta tries to see if it's tastey but not very often.
Laura & CTB
It will get better once they work out that you are not tasty You could try using a small brightly coloured or stainless steell dish to feed them treats from - they will start to recognise that dish as the "food" dish and ingnore everything else! Snowy
I agree, they do grow out of it. Especially if you don't hand feed them but use a bowl.
Egluntyne
Top tip Lapinou....don't go near them with painted toenails and flip flops.
Lapinou
Top tip Lapinou....don't go near them with painted toenails and flip flops. I learnt that with my parents hens as a teenager! I have a pair of gardening clogs that I never venture outside without when our chickens are free-ranging!
