Mumsvoice
A duck arrived in my garden this morning and is showing no signs of wanting the leave. Should I do anything? Looks OK - legs fine and wings oK. It is asleep in the shade at the minute.
Janty
I'd make it feel welcome. Hubby's parents used to keep ducks and he didn't like them so he has said 'NO'. However, if one or two came to stay of their own accord, what could you do? The ducks at school had ducklings hatch out and the children were all urging me to take them home to look after. Couldn't really sneak them home as hubby works in the same school. Think he might have noticed.
Mumsvoice
I would love to make it welcome but not sure how to. Should I make it a 'nest' in the shed for tonight? What about my cat - I've kept her in all day and she's not too happy. Can ducks hold their own against a cat? all advice welcome
Sunshine
We quite near to a canal and have an outdoor swimming pool so used to have lots of ducks come and have a swim in the pool and a wander on the grass. We liked them until they started pooing in the pool so then we sent the dog outside to chase them off-they wouldn't go if we went out to try and scare them. Now we see them in the fields around our house and keep a cover on the pool so everyones happy.I would just leave it and it will find a place to sleep or move on.If you fed it im sure it would stay or keep coming back for food.I've no idea about cats and ducks. Tessa the Duchess
Why don't you ask the 'Duck' forum people what you should do. I would love to have some ducks, but I once saw a pic of gooner girls garden which put me off slightly Tessa
Rona
We live near the river and often get ducks in the garden, particulary in the spring when there will be 2 or 3 drakes chasing one female, then a bit later on we'll get 'batchelor' groups, who will often just settle themselves down for a snooze in the middle of the garden. They don't seem to have a set timetable but if I am about when they visit I will throw a handful of corn on the path for them, so now if they see me they run to the path and quack excitedly. So far they haven't stayed long enough to do any damage to the garden and the cats ignore them
Mumsvoice
thanks to all who replied. The duck decided to leave just before dark and went as suddenly as it arrived. So after a day of wondering what i should do I need not have worried at all !! Having the duck for the day has made me look forward to the eglu and chickens arriving even more - can't wait. Helly Welly
In Berkhamsted, my parents home town, there are a couple of ducks who often go wandering along the High Street, having drifted up from the canal. I expect they keep returning becuase people feed them but they certainly are a sight for sore eyes.
