Cheaper option for netting

Recommended Posts

I've been after some netting to fence off my garden around the eglu to keep the chooks off my bedding plants. I wanted something like the stuff sold by Omlet but really couldn't justify the hefty price tag, especially as I didn't need anywhere near 25 metres. In the end I made my own, I'm really happy with the final result as it looks pretty good - I'll post pics shortly.

Basically I bought 12m of net from Knowlenets, I went for the Peacock/Geese stuff which costs 47p per sq m. It's akin to tennis netting and feels pretty good quality. Note that although they quote £6 postage when you order, if you're only getting a small amount they don't charge anywhere near that (I got charged just over £3).

Next you need some posts to attach it to, I wanted something as good as the posts that come with the netting sold by Omlet that can be moved easily. In the end I found some polyposts like these that have a spike at the bottom with a footplate:-

You need to be careful here as you will get hit for postage costs (£6), so I recommend trying to source some nearby to save on postage.

The net simply slides into the 8 or so loops all the way up the posts, pull it tight (and use tent pegs) and that's it - a fence that looks as good as any other for a fraction of the price (£21-26 for 12m depending on postage). Obviously you can't attach your 12V battery to this one (well you can but it wouldn't do much...), but if like me you're not bothered about that then this is a great alternative.

Just thought I'd share the tip!

I can see why you think this is a good alternative, but I am very happy with my Omlet netting - it is proper stock fencing that is extremely strong and has metal wires and plastic strands. I understand it is more expensive than this alternative, but in comparison with similar stock fencing sold by others Omlet's is cheaper than most other suppliers and comes with more poles.

I got my electric fencing from http://www.farmcareuk.com which is £45 for 25m of electric poultry netting (like the omlet netting but with fewer posts) and then I bought 20 bamboo pea sticks for £2 to add extra structure to the net as it gets a bit floppy. So, that is a pretty reasonable price too I think, plus the option to electrify it if needed.

(I actually bought the 50 m kit including the electric sender which is the expensive bit so it was £170 altogether, plus £10 for a second-hand car battery to power the fence)

Thanks I was looking for something like this. Mine doesn't need to be secure as it's just to keep them out of the flower beds as they have so far eaten all my strawberries in one day! The rest of the garden is well fenced so we wouldn't lose them. I was looking online last night but you've saved me the job!

Cheers
