Keeping flies off cube -- Citrus Magic

Recommended Posts

Well, about 1 hour after my cube arrived, the flies began to have a party. Many of our larger flying friends ended up dutifully ensconced in the FliTrap hanging from a nearby tree branch. But the tinier, midge-like ones decided that settling in for a sunbathe atop the cube was their idea of heaven.

So I tried using my Citrus MagicAll-Purpose Cleaner from the kitchen. So far has worked a treat -- three days and not a fly has settled atop the cube again!

Citrus Magic is new to the UK -- a biodegradable environmetally friendly product, similar to Ecover. It's a bit expensive to have shipped, but don't know what stores sell them yet. My mum has used all their products at her home in the US for over 10 years, I think. I just know they smell wonderful, work great, and I ordered a batch of different stuff for the house. Will now make sure I stock up on extra all-purpose for the cube -- or maybe their pet-friendly Germicidal Cleaner for inside as well.

I think the reason it might work on the flies is the citrus oil in the product -- must be similar scent to citronella. But it cleans off dirt and leaves a nice sheen to the top of the cube. So far, it's worked well.... so just thought I would share.

That sounds like a good tip :) .

Just googled Citrus Magic - they sell in Europe now and delivery is free to mainland UK :D .

The all purpose cleaner looks expensive but the bottle seems to be more than twice the size of your normal kitchen spray bottle so may not be that bad after all.

I'll have a good look at their website!

Oh, great, free postage 6 weeks after I ordered the entire spring-cleaning box! -- but it's great to know my next order will be shipped at no cost.

The sprays I have have lasted a while. But admittedly, I got the gel spray for the stove and oven; the general purpose for counter tops; the pet-friendly for my dog's bed and other plastics; and hospital grade germicidal for the bathroom.... so the 6 weeks usage has been spread out over 4 bottles. Oh, and did I mention how nice the air freshners smell?!

I think part of my affinity for the products is that they "smell like home" and remind me of my mum.... awww.... homesick

Hi StephenieSB

I remembered your post in my local eco shop (in Glastonbury) today and spotted a couple of new US products, unfortunately this is where my memory let me down and I bought Orange Mate which looked very simlar to Citrus Magic. Unfortunately, I've already taken one of the other things I bought back, so am too embarrassed to return it, so wondered if you had any experience of this brand. It smells great, but does say to rinse thoroughly which then washes away the small and defeats the object (I assume). Do you just ignore the rinsing advise when using Citrus Magic ? I assume a bit of very dilute citrus won't harm the surface of an eglu ?? Any advice very welcome, Thanks

Hi Yvonne -- no, sorry, I've not used Orange Mate, though it seems so similar. I was going to ask Omlet myself about what to use on top of the cube. I am assuming it's just a rugged, all-weather plastic and can handle a bit of household, all-natural cleaning spray... so far, no worries with my Citrus magis... but I cannot say about Orange Mate in particular, sorry.

Kitchen and Bath power have a citrus base and are similarly biodegradable

I've tried those both in the house, and they just don't do it for me. Sorry to sound like cleaning products are a hobby of mine or anything (I live a sad existence, but not that sad) -- but I don't think those clean very well. They may well keep off flies, though, so hey... worth a try!
