They're just too clever...

Recommended Posts

if I'm going out soon, or expecting to be wanting to not check up on them for a few hours, I'll rush out and shut the run door if I notice them all inside, to save myself having to herd them in. They've cottoned on now though. This morning, they were all lying down sunning themselves right next to the eglu - we have the converter added to the run so it's fairly long. They saw me come out of the back door and leapt up and ran to the run door as quickly as they could to get out of the run before I managed to shut them up  I managed to shut two of them in and, luckily, the escapee was the one who's fairly easy to grab so I got them all in easily in the end. I did laugh at the speed at which they stopped their sunbathing and rushed to the run door

If we want to get ours in the run we just do our corn trick, lob corn in the run and they run in after it, then we shut them in. They fall for it everytime

We'd do that, but they're so daft we have to leave a little trail for them

Also, we're trying to limit treats at the moment in an attempt to get our first egg before the 19th when we go away for a week!

Anyone else find mealworms really :vom: ? I have to use a spoon to chuck them out - I'm not normally at all squeamish (I'm a nurse, for heavens sake!), but I just can't stand the mealworms!

I don't mind the mealworms (although I wouldn't eat them obviously!) but I've put mine into a plastic jar thing that had peppercorns in it. It's got a lid that flips open and is great for chucking mealworms into the run.

Oh fab idea! Will do that I think.

If I do that, and they're not all right in front of the door, at least one of them will charge down the outside of the run looking for the corn  .

Not the sharpest knives in the drawer, my girls  .

My two do the same which is why I really had to look at this thread and wonder who had managed to get some intellichooks!

My 2 have cottoned on that when the dog is taken out the back gate it's time for them to come out....they cluck like mad & parade up & down by the door of the run!!! They also fall for the corn trick when we're trying to get them back in!! If they're rummaging around under the huge bush, I only have to rattle the corn in the tin & it's like a scene from chariots of fire!!! You can get caught in the stampede!! Fall for it every time!!

:lol::lol: My trick is a few chopped grapes-they come hurtling across the garden for them, but Prissy ALWAYS does the outside of the run routine, d'oh!
