Our Benji has got what appears to be a scab in his fur, just beyond his neck area going down his back, it feels hard in his fur but doesnt appear to be causing any discomfort even when you stroke him. Just curious to see if anybody else as ever come across anything like this.

Thanks Jay X

do rabbits get Rainscald? Donkeys do: Its a grey scab, rather than one caused by blood. :?::roll:

Annie im not sure, never heard of that before does look a grey brown colour but it doesnt seem too connected to his flesh, seems more in his fur but i dont want to pull it too hard for fear of hurting him.

It does sound like rainscald then! Its a crust which the skin forms as a defense against bacteria which build up on the skin in wet, warm conditions. Basically all animals have these bacteria, but when areas get wet, they all congragate there and start to cause an irritation.

Advice for donkeys ( :!: ) is to pick it off (the fur will come away too: Don't worry, it will grow back), and bathe in Malaseb (a general animal anti bacterial wash available from most horsey places).

If you don't pick it off, then the hair follicle can be damaged and fur can change colour, or stop growing.

Of course, this is only IF its rainscald, and the reatment os for DONKEYS, but it does sound likely, given the recent weather conditions  and your description.

Certianly it wouldn't hurt to give the rabbit a shampoo with Malaseb if you can get it!

All is well so far, vet thinks Benji has just grazed or cut himself on something and the way he runs around the garden like a mad thing this is highly possible, got some cream to put on it and just keep an eye on it for a few days. So no panic, mind easier said than done to keep him still to administer cream to the sore, oh well will try. Thanks for the kind words.
