A couple of hours in Edinburgh - what to do

Recommended Posts

Am going with OH to a conference in Edinburgh in September. I have been there on business but never had time to explore before. Myself and the other company 'wives' will have a few hours free on the morning of the conference to mooch around. We are not hot on shoppping and will probably opt for sightseeing, (we like walking).

Any suggestions on how best to use our time. I think we will have more free time in the afternoon with our OH's, before dinner, and possibly the next day as well, so we need lots of suggestions.

Oh and one of the men in the party is addicted to shopping so if anyone has any gems on that subject....

It's got to be the royal mile - the castle is at one end holyrood palace and the scotish parlament at the other end, with tourist sites in between including the underground medieval streets which is really interesting the royal mile was built on top of the old buildings, which still remain below.

You could do loads of things! Tour bus that takes in the best of the city centre sites, a walk down the Royal Mile, a tour under the city in Mary Kings Close, The Museum of Childhood, a bus out to South Queensferry to catch the ferry to Inchcomb Island (although you really do need all day for that), Dynamic Earth - I could go on... :D

I think they've covered it all  .

You could climb up the Scott Monument (lots & lots of steps but a great view!)

The city tour bus is good as you can jump off and on as you wish.

I'd recommend Mary Kings Close but you might want to book before turning up.

You can also do ghost tours in the old town which are quite fun. http://www.mercattours.com/home.asp
