Gilles
Emily (a Bluebell) died midmorning on the 10th July. She had woken up (c06:50) and gone back upto the laying area without eating. I opened the 'egg hatch'' from time to time and she exibited teh normal normal signs of laying an egg (we had previously monitored via a remote, battery operated web/tv camera). However, she died. I contacted a colleague who has a small holding (which includes 50+ chickens) and Karen (Pimlotts, from where we had got the chickens) and the clear consensus was that she had been 'egg bound' and died of a heart attack etc. Karen also kindly visited us to check the other chickens - all of who are fine - all of whom are now laying. I was reassured that I/we could have done nothing to resolve the situation - but as someone said, livestock can without warning become deadstock. A very traumatic and upsetting situation - one only in retrospect realises what social animals chickens are and how they become pets with their own personalities. And interestingly, the group dynamics have changed, to the better although we would rather have not lost Emily. Although not directly connected, we have reduced the treats eg spagetti which can 'clog' the crops and assumed a more regimented diet. Ms Marple
I am very sorry to hear of your loss. I am also very new to this but am watching mine avidly at the moment so that I get a feel for what they are like - in the hope that I will notice any unusual changes.
