chooklady
Has anyone found the ideal container to use as a dust bath? I bought some play sand today and I have some Diatom also. Although my chooks will be out in the garden as much as possible we do have a fox problem so I want to provide them with a dust bath in their run. Also How often would you change the contents of the bath?
Steph101
Large, terracotta flower pots are good. We tried play sand but ours never bothered with it. They prefer fine, dark compost soil, with some diatom or mite powder in there. As for changing it - they tend to do that themselves; they gradually kick it all out, and you just have to top it up. bellekatz
I use a big old cat litter tray for mine, filled with dry compost.
chooklady
I like the idea of a terracotta flower pot. What sort of diametre and depth? Perhaps I'll do some sand and some compost until the sands used up!
mrsm_jones
I have a big pink tub trug
FruitandNutCake
I gave up with a container as the rabbits decided to use it as a toilet. Mine just found a couple of areas of flower bed which they have turned into craters, and as they are out from 3:30 each weekday, and all day at weekends, I don't worry about giving them an extra dust bath. I will have to have a rethink in the winter when it is raining continuously!!
Valkyrie
I have a big green tub trug with compost and topsoil (from a bag and it has sand and grit added) mixed with Diatom and louse powder. There's not much room, but Cheyenne went in on her own and ended up with the dirtiest armpits and bloomers I've ever seen, while she was laying in it she looked like roadkill! The other two squeeze in together.
