kayandrob Posted July 27, 2008 Share Posted July 27, 2008 Hi All, we went on our first proper look round at chickens today (still got 2 weeks till our Eglu arrives but thought we should try and look round and really think about what we want from our chooks) anyway we went to the domestic fowl trust this morning, and when we first got there we looked in the for sale section, they didn't seem to have alot of choice in there but I found more uncomfortable was how small the cages were they are kept in, I could have easily took them all home today for just feeling sorry for them. They didn't have alot of choice either, I think we more expected a larger range of chickens running round in large pens and you choose which you want, is this not how its done anywhere? We went and walked round the fields and fell in love with so many of them especially the buff pekin and frizzle that followed our 2 year old son, we have been discussing all afternoon about what types to go for and really want to get a pekin, a hybrid (probably a goldline) and another Bantam ( I really want 4 chooks but hubby doesn't think they will all fit) but we were under the impression the only ones for sale are the ones in the small cages in the room for sale. Can anyone suggest other places to look? We are in Worcestershire but are prepared to travel a bit probably an hour and a half if there is really somewhere good to look at, so basically we are after some suggestions on where to look? They have Speckled hens, Bluebelles, Goldlines, Rangers and Black Stars in at the moment....Sussex Star, Amber Star and White Stars on their way soon as well. I always seem to go on about them but they are relatively close to you, you could try foning Ash End House Childrens Farm as I know they have lots of Bantams, Pekin Bantams and a couple of Hybrids. I posted on your other post about a lady called Sharon Gould in Pinvin, near Pershore. She really is great to go to. She has a field, with lots of big pens with various breeds in - we totally changed our minds over what breeds we wanted and Sharon was really helpful. The Domestic Fowl Trust keep a lot of their hybrids for sale out amongst the collection. You'd have to ask to see which ones were for sale. Good luck, I hope you find what you're looking for. I really liked her, she is so enthusiastic and knowledgeable without being overbearing. Her hens are great, and she has a wide variety. (we are looking to get 3 chooks but might struggle finding them all at the same place) also should I ring round now or the week we get our eglu? I don't want to waste peoples time as looking on most websites they dont reserve stock, really interested in the merry dale place they have alot of lovely birds but whether they will be in stock I don't know, is it best to buy all the chickens at the same age? ie POL or can some be younger etc? sorry for all the questions! ezmuzic Posted July 31, 2008 Share Posted July 31, 2008 We just collected 3 hens from Wernlas today and I have to say the service was second to none, it is best to call in advance to see what stock they have, it's also worth staying to have a look at the breeds they keep there. Oak Meadow Farm is only 2 minutes away from me and I know Gail there but she is away this week and we were 2 impatient to wait!!! Anyway we ended up with 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 Welbar and a Buff Wyandotte..........Sure we willl be upgrading to a cube soon there are just too many breeds to choose from. kayandrob Posted July 31, 2008 Author Share Posted July 31, 2008 I have looked at their website we have decided to go for Bantams we weren't to fussed about the egg laying as much as we actually thought. We are off to see some on Saturday at a place between Rugby and Daventry, I am so excited I am now chicken mad, hubby wondered what I was going to do after we got married and I didn't have the wedding forums, hehe! Also ordered a compost bin through the council, they are doing offers at the moment I think till next year, only cost us £12 thought it ideal for the chicken poop, will report back on Saturday after seeing the Pekins.
