Chickendoodle
My hens have been laying for a couple of weeks now - Jolene was the last to start and her first egg had quite a large blob of what looked like blood in it. Is this just where her egg laying is sorting itself out? I know that we are all used to uniform supermarket eggs so it seems really weird getting one that is "not normal". I always break the eggs into a cup before using them but if it had been a boiled egg it would have been a nasty shock to the person eating it! The egg looked perfectly normal from the outside - it has made me a bit wary about giving the eggs away as I wouldn't like anyone else to find a blob! Yolky
OK forgive me if I am wrong but isn't that the bit that would become the chick if fertilised? I am sure this is what my Mum told me when I was a kid, don't see it in shop eggs much these days.
Krysia
We occasionally get one like that I think it happens if the chicken has a hock or a scare during the development of the egg. Don;t quote me though
Snowy
It is normal to have the occasional blood spot. usually due to a small bleed in the egg laying tackle, as said above due to shock or just due to immaturity. It is not the bit that becomes the chick though, sorry
Hen Watch
Blood spots and meat spots are all OK. As are different shaped, textured, coloured, ridged eggs. You soon realise that supermarket "perfect" eggs are all uniform and you never see these different, perfectly normal eggs. Take a look at this. http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23990
